They’re clearly meant for players who harbor the bendera 88  same kind of love that the developer clearly has for PlayStation. You can find everything from miniature PS Vitas to working PlayStations with Multi-Taps set up in the Labo once you’ve unlocked them. GPU Jungle features a monkey suit that lets you use the DualSense’s motion controls to swing back and forth as well as climb up structures.

It’s pretty standard, but everything is elevated by the DualSense controller. Inspecting all that gaming gubbins up-close as a tiny robot gave me a new appreciation for the art of Sony’s hardware design. I’m not a technically minded gamer, and for me the appeal of individual consoles has always been decidedly secondary to the games I can play on them. But there is proper magic in how engineers and programmers create the machines that enable our gaming experiences, and Astro’s Playroom helped me to see it. These capsules might contain money, a diorama for the PS Labo room, or one of the 10 artifacts or 28 puzzle pieces.

On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. Is improved force feedback and the same funny little collection of gyros and touchscreens carried over from the DualShock 4 really the next-gen difference? I’m not entirely sure, and it may well prove to be another false dawn that, like HD rumble on the Switch, is a pleasant addition that soon fades into the background. Once complete, it’s a veritable visual history of PlayStation as a whole. If you play enough and replay levels, you should have no problem putting it all together. Further mandatory physical interaction with the cair 78 controller includes blowing into the microphone and flicking your finger to launch Astro like a slingshot. Whilst there are serious problems, I personally found these to have a workaround that made them doable. The microphone can be spammed by rubbing your finger against the built-in mic of the controller, simulating blowing, and the slingshot allows you to be quite slow and gentle with just brushing the touchpad backwards.

One player that uses a VR headset plays as the Monster, while the other players that use controllers play as the Heroes, known as the VR 4. The first phase of this minigame involves the Heroes on the run saving as many Bots as possible while dodging debris from the buildings the Monster destroys with its head. The second phase involves a boss fight between the Heroes and the Monster. The VR 4 have to throw many objects (Amount depends on how many Bots the Heroes rescue in the first phase) at the Monster until four lights of the visor break. The Monster must defeat the VR 4 by dodging the objects and knock out the helicopters onto the platforms to sink them. DualSense is the single biggest change to playing traditional video games.

This is a reference to 1998’s Spyro the Dragon on PS1, developed by Insomniac Games. This references inFamous, released on the PS3 in 2009 by Sucker Punch. Protagonist Cole McGrath has electric superpowers one of which is the induction Grind that lets him accelerate along metal cables.

Following the events of Astro’s Playroom, a starship resembling the PlayStation 5 console is seen flying around the cosmos, featuring Astro and numerous bots resembling him, representing his entire crew. They suddenly encounter a green alien named Space Bully Nebulax, who chases after the mothership, attacks the crew and steals its CPU. This causes the mothership to explode, with its parts scattered throughout space, and the Bots stranded in other planets. Astro Bot is a 3D platform game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5.

This was definitely the least inspired of the suits as it involves inputs that could’ve been achieved on the DualShock 4. However, overall, these power-ups added some welcome variety to the gameplay while showcasing the potential of the PS5’s immersive controller. They’ll be the first things I’ll make my friends play when they come around to try my PS5. The most important part of any platformer is how the character feels, and I’m pleased to announce that Astro controls with the precision and effortlessness of a well-tuned instrument.
